Dorothy A. Mirs, 92, of Sumner, died Saturday evening, May 30, 2015, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. The family requests no flowers, but if you would like to display a quilt Dorothy sewed for you, please contact the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting the family.
Dorothy Agnes, daughter of Edward and Hennerika (Immermann) Gitch, was born March 3, 1923 on the family farm south of Fredericksburg, Iowa. She was baptized March 25, 1923, by Rev. O. C. Durr and confirmed June 2, 1935 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, in Fredericksburg, Iowa by Rev. Durr. She attended the parochial schools of St. Paul’s and the rural schools of Fredericksburg Township. She graduated from Fredericksburg High School with the class of 1941.
On November 29, 1942, she was united in marriage with Glenn (Jim) Mirs, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg by Rev. Wunderlich. She and her husband farmed in the Spring Fountain area until 1978, when they moved to Sumner, and resided at 601 E. 1st St.
Dorothy was employed at Sumner Packing Company for eighteen years, and at St. John American Lutheran Church as a custodian for sixteen years. She was also a correspondent for the Sumner Gazette for thirteen years, prior to retiring in the spring of 1997.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane Kuker of Brownsburg, Indiana; eight grandchildren, and one sister, Marjorie (Karl) Eisele of Sumner.
In addition to her husband, Jim, who died in 2008, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Karen Whaley; son-in-law, Douglas Kuker; two brothers, Dale and Kenneth Gitch; and a sister, Luella (Don) Ritnour.
